This piece was made within Max using Beap modules found in Max MSP for the synthesis and all controlled using the Kinect. The music is made up of six individual instruments: 2 oscillators, 1 sampler and 3 granular synthesisers. I used a selection of samples that I found online at looperman.com for the granular synthesisers and the sample player, then created a plucked synth and bass synth, all of which used Gigaverb (a Beap module for reverb) to enhance the ambient effect. The volume of each instrument is controlled by the Z and Y positions of both my hands. The hand position data is received through Maxhole from another patch that is running dp.kinect.
I then sent the audio through the computer to the video patch, which is an audio reactive particle system made using Jitter and Java shaders, and recorded live alongside the music. This was based on a tutorial from Amazing Max Stuff that I customized and added extra features to, such as audio reaction and the ability to control the scale, rotation and intensity of the particles depending on my distance from the Kinect. The number of particles, lines, colour and scale are automatically controlled by the amplitude of the sounds coming in.
